Aviation – How to Succeed 3

Air Transport

The most important manufacturers of civil transport aircraft, taken on a worldwide basis, include the following:

Airbus – It is a subsidiary of EADS, a huge European aerospace corporation, and manufactures aircraft on their behalf. Airbus has its base in Toulouse in France, and it manufactures nearly half of the world’s jet airliners. It has sixteen sites within Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Spain, and employs a total of around 57,000 people across these sites.

Boeing – It is a major defense and aerospace company with a manufacturing function based in Seattle. In terms of revenue, it is the largest aircraft manufacturer in the world, as well as the second-largest aerospace and defense contractor, globally. In fact, it holds the position of being the largest exporter in the United States.

Bombardier – It a major aircraft manufacturer with headquarters in Quebec in Canada. It has a versatile product range including regional aircraft, business jets, mass transportation equipment, recreational equipment, such as snowmobiles, and is a financial services provider. The aerospace division accounts for around 50% of the company’s income. It’s best selling aircraft include the Dash 8 and CRJ lines of regional airliners. The Learjet company is a subsidiary of Bombardier and manufactures jets under the Learjet name.

Embraer – It is a Brazilian aerospace company that manufactures commercial, military, and corporate aircraft, together with associated aerospace services. In respect of worldwide aircraft manufacturers, it has the third largest yearly delivery of commercial aircraft, behind Boeing and Airbus. Its headquarters and principal production facilities are in São Paulo.

Tupolev – It is a renowned Russian aerospace and defence company, with headquarters centred in Moscow. It is understood that the Russian government is planning to merge Tupolev with other famed aircraft manufacturers, including Mikoyan, Ilyushin, Irkut, Sukhoi, and Yakovlev as a new company named United Aircraft Corporation. Development, manufacturing and overhaul of both civil and military aircraft and weapons systems are just some of the aerospace ventures that the company is involved in. It is also involved in the technologies associated with missile and naval aviation.

In terms of individual specialisations, it can be said that:

Boeing, Airbus, and Tupolev concentrate on wide and narrow-bodied jet airliners

Bombardier and Embraer concentrate on regional airliners, which refer to small airliners designed to fly between 35 and 100 passengers from point to point on short-haul flights. Such small airliners are most suitable for the regional divisions of the larger international airlines.

In order that these manufacturers may function efficiently, extensive networks of parts suppliers, from around the globe, specialising in their own niche areas, provide appropriate support. Such backup is all the more necessary since, in some instances, the manufacturer will provide only the initial design, with final assembly in their own plants.

The Chinese ACAC consortium, a subsidiary of Aviation Industries of China I (AVIC I), formed in 2002 by various Chinese aviation companies, will also soon enter the civil transport market with its ACAC ARJ21 regional jet. The ARJ21 is a twin-engined airliner and the first passenger jet to be developed and manufactured by the People’s Republic of China.

1/5 Are We Alone In The Universe?

For fifty years, the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence has been scanning the galaxy for a message from an alien civilisation. So far to no avail, but a recent breakthrough suggests they may one day succeed. Horizon joins the planet hunters who’ve discovered a new world called Gliese 581 c. It is the most Earth-like planet yet found around another star and may have habitats capable of supporting life. NASA too hopes to find fifty more Earth-like planets by the end of the decade, all of which dramatically increases the chance that alien life has begun elsewhere in the galaxy.

Have high energy prices made the Aviation industry vulnerable?

In other words, would it be a bad idea now to even consider getting a job or career that is aviation related?

Research Report on Chinese Aircraft Financial Leasing Industry, 2009-2010

Aircraft leasing is a basic means for the airlines of all countries to update and expand their fleets. Out of the global fleets, leased aircraft accounts for over 60%. With low costs, high flexibilities and many financing channels, aircraft leasing has become the practical choice for airlines. Since the 1990s, Chinese domestic airlines have begun to regularly employ the means of operational leasing and financial leasing to bring in plenty of aircraft, which has partially released capital pressures of these companies and helped them achieve the goal of financing by combining items.

Since 2006, Chinese airline transport had risen to the second place among the contracting states of International Civil Aviation Organization. China had become the second largest airline market in the world. Financial leasing, operating leasing and spot exchange purchase are three main patterns for airlines to buy aircraft. However, for quite a long period, as there were not strong professional aircraft leasing companies in China, Chinese aircraft leasing market was almost wholly occupied by foreign institutions. This had restricted the deeper development of relevant industries. Therefore, it has a deep practical significance to develop Chinese aircraft leasing industry in such a background.

China has begun to develop the aircraft leasing business in the 1980s. But most lessors, financing parties and assurance providers were foreign enterprises. With the acceleration of the internationalization of leasing business and the gradual expansion of Chinese leasing enterprises, the long-term and steady returns with low risks will be the objects of most Chinese leasing enterprises.

In 2007, the amount of Chinese financial leasing contracts reached 8.1 billion RMB (1.11 billion USD) and the profits were 210 million RMB and the taxes were 70 million RMB, rising by 23.3%, 55.6% and 12.8% separately over 2006. Aircraft leasing has become a highlight. Since the first aircraft leasing business was done in 2006, China had finished the leasing business of 42 aircraft by the end of 2007 with a total value of 8.15 billion RMB. The aircraft leasing business came to a new upsurge. In 2008, when the financial crisis expanded to all industries and even the international airline transport and leasing industry, which was the strongest industry in the global economy, was also affected. Chinese airline industry and Chinese airline leasing industry become the hope of the world without doubt.

With the acceleration of international economic integration, Chinese aircraft leasing market faces a great prospect.

The Besler Steam Plane

A Travel Air 2000 biplane made the world’s first piloted flight under steam power over Oakland, California, on 12 April 1933. The strangest feature of the flight was its relative silence; spectators on the ground could hear the pilot when he called to them from mid-air. The aircraft, piloted by William Besler, had been fitted with a two-cylinder, 150 hp reciprocating engine. An important contribution to its design was made by Nathan C. Price, a former Doble Steam Motors engineer. Price was working on high pressure compact engines for rail and road transport; the purpose of the flight was to obtain publicity for this work. Following its unexpectedly favourable reception Price went to Boeing and worked on various aviation projects, but Boeing dropped the idea of a steam aeroengine in 1936. Price later worked for Lockheed where his experience with developing compact burners for steam boilers helped to design Lockheed’s first jet engine. The advantages of the “Besler System” that were claimed at the time included the elimination of audible noise and destructive vibration; greater efficiency at low engine speeds and also at high altitudes where lower air temperatures assisted condensation; reduced likelihood of engine failure; reduced maintenance costs; reduced fuel costs, since fuel oil was used in place of petrol; reduced fire hazard since the fuel was less volatile and operating temperatures were lower; and a lack of need for radio shielding. For capacities in excess of 1000 horse power a turbine captures the energy released by the expansion of steam more efficiently than a piston. Thus, the steam reciprocating engine turned out to be unsuitable for scaling up to the needs of large aircraft.
