WWII aircraft bring back memories

I read an ad in The Des Moines Register announcing the scheduled arrival of a B-17 World War II aircraft named “The Sentimental Journey.” That sent me off on such a journey with an interesting twist. It was just a year ago that another B-17, “The Liberty Belle,” only one of eight remaining aircraft of this type still flying, made its run through Des Moines International Airport on a Midwest tour.

San Diego Balboa Park landing pattern 3391a

DB’s travels posted a photo: One of the first surprises for many visitors to San Diego is the location of the airport. The airport was built in the 1930′s and even though the city has grown around it and airplanes have grown in size, it has remained the city’s only commercial airport. It is quite startling when flying in to San Diego to be flying between buildings that are very nearby, and over what appears to be a very nice park. The park itself, Balboa, really is quite nice — except the planes coming very close overhead every few minutes. Look at the map to see how startling close (and small) the airport is to everything.
